Chalice is coded to MCA CAT2 (category two) and inspected annually. These inspections cover the safety aspects and integrity of the ship and include everything from having current up-to-date charts (irrespective of whatever clever electronics are on board) to fire extinguishers and lifejackets.
Although not a requirement, Chalice is fitted with Vosper Maxi-fin stabilizers. These are hydraulically controlled fins attached to the keel below the water line, which can be activated if we are sailing in rough seas (yes, it does happen sometimes!). Although Chalice is perfectly safe and stable without this equipment, it does help to give a smoother ride which – if nothing else – is greatly appreciated by the cook when preparing meals.
